Although Elena would not describe walking hunched over like an old woman her “normal” state, she did start to seem more like herself following the really bad day. She resumed some activities independently and took a brief but tiring walk outside. She started emailing friends with updates on her progress, and her sense of humor came back to life. Six days after surgery Elena was ready to get into a taxi and venture out into the world. It was an exhausting outing, but she did appreciate the opportunity to eat a good restaurant meal and pick up a few groceries. (Costa Rica is not known for its food, but there are some great restaurants in Escazu!)
Nine days after arrival, it was time for me to head back to Texas on an early morning flight. That afternoon, Elena saw Dr. Lev and had her stitches removed. It was the first time she was able to check out his work in front of a full-length mirror, and she was pleased with what she saw. Any lingering buyer’s remorse disappeared.
